The Law of Unintended Consequences of Government Bans and Prohibitions

Free special event at USC Gould School of Law features experts to discuss the impact of the national movement to ban vaping, e-cigarettes, and menthol cigarettes.

The lessons learned from decades of failed marijuana prohibition policies should give lawmakers pause before banning more drugs. Instead, reactionary attempts to curtail vaping-related illnesses and deaths have been guided by fear. Failing to acknowledge that these illnesses and untimely deaths are caused by the unregulated and under-regulated markets for marijuana and nicotine, respectively, has lawmakers pulling out old moves from the 1980s tough-on-crime drug war playbook.

The answer is more regulation, not less. Prohibition is the opposite of regulation. Legalization is the only way to control health and safety concerns.
